Inverness is located in Citrus County in a rural area about 65 miles North of Tampa and about the same distance from Orlando. Due to the presence of numerous lakes the County is also called the “Lake District”, where the Cristal River and the Withlacochee River form the connections to the Gulf of Mexico. The South part of the County is the Withlacoochee State Forest park, ideal for all kind of outdoor activities. Bike and walking paths run through the forest passing many lakes with spectacular view points. Florida is especially known for its golf facilities and that is not different in Citrus County. You can find golf courses virtually “on every corner of the street” one more beautiful and challenging than the other. You already can play 18 holes (including buggy) from $20 (differs per season) on the most beautiful and challenging courses.
For lovers of water sports Citrus County offers a variety of possibilities, such as, sailing, canoe, kayaking, waterski, rafting and fishing. You can make an airboat ride on the river/lake to spot alligators. A more easy and relaxing ride is to drift down the Withlacoochee river in a raft while enjoying the beautiful scenery. This journey runs thru mostly rural areas and don’t be worried, you will be picked up at the end and brought back to the starting point. Hiring a boat (pontoon) is another option, where you can drive the boat yourself and thus determine where you go. During a boat ride from Homosassa Springs to the Gulf of Mexico over the Homosassa River you could be accompanied by dolphins and/or manatees. Dolphins love to “play” with the boat and they normally stay around for a while. This ride also offers stunning sceneries of which many are authentic Florida natural backgrounds. A unique experience!
In Homosassa Springs many (mostly) Harley Davidson motorbikers meet in the “Shed” on Sundays. This meeting place lies on the banks of the Homosassa river. While listening to live music from the sixties (the band looks like coming from the sixties) you can enjoy a cool drink while overviewing the river and gaze at the most beautiful bikes. Even the prices for drinks and food are from the sixties.
Of course Florida is well known for its fun and theme parks. The Disney attractions are located near Orlando a good hour’s drive from Inverness. Sea World is my personal favorite. This is really worthwhile a visit and watch the killer whale “Shamu” perform his stunts. Just enhance the fun by taking a front row seat and get soaking wet. For the kids Magic Kingdom is the place where Donald and Micky and many more creatures can be adored.
Being in Orlando it is recommended to pay a visit to the Florida shopping mall and if that is not enough try the factory outlet centers on Vine Road and International Drive (take an extra suitcase). All the big brands (Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, etc.) are represented and offer quality products for very competitive prices.
Bush Gardens and Cypress Garden are located closer to Tampa just over an hour’s drive from Inverness. For a more cultural trip you could go to the Dali museum in St. Petersburg just South of Tampa. All in all there is something for everybody.
