General information

Golf is one of the most popular activities in Florida. The many golf courses and the excellent weather conditions provide optimal golf conditions all year long. The daily hours of sunshine average over 7 hours at minimum per day and that is also during the winter months. The average monthly air temperature is ±30 °C (86 °F) in the summer months and ±24 °C (76 °F) during the winter months. The summer is the wet season and almost every afternoon some rain will fall. The winter is the dry season with virtually no rain at all and the nights can be pretty cool and some night frost is not unusual. In fact it is always good weather to play golf. In Europe, next to stroke play, the stableford point system is very popular. In fact the EGA handicap is based on the stableford system. To calculate the playing handicap, golf courses have been rated in difficulty using the so called “Slope Rate”, SR and “Course Rating”, CR. Using these ratings together with the par (PAR) of the course and your EGA handicap (EGAHCP), your “Playing Handicap” (PHCP) is calculated as follows: PHCP = (EGAHCP × SR)/113 + (CR – PAR) (≥ ½ rounded up)

Thru the property manager you can buy Executive Golfcards for $ 32.50 each. With this card you can play for reduced green fees on affiliated golfcourses. The card also gives access to private courses to which normally you have no access.  For further information:

Lakeside Golf en Country Club

The home course is not too difficult to play, is quite open and only has two small ponds on hole 8 and 11. The water on hole 8 hardly comes into play, but on hole 11 you have to be more careful. The water is located at about 220 yards from the tee and stretches quite across the fair way. You will need some attention here. If your ball gets in the water after all and when you look for it you might encounter a few baby alligators who reside there. The golf course is reasonably flat with exceptions on hole 6 with an elevated green and hole 15 playing downward from the tee. Hole 4 (stroke index 1) is a tough dog leg to the left with a lengthy second shot over a small canyon. The golf course is a nice mix of open space and old American oak trees mixed with indigenous palm trees.

Unfortunately, this course momentarily is in a rather bad shape because of poor maintenance. Also considering the relative high green fee (up to $ 35) it is not worthwhile to play this course.

The good news is that several beautiful and challenging golf courses can be found “around the corner”, such as:

The golfcourse of Stonecreek is located at about a 50 minute drive from Inverness on the outskirts of Ocala. This course is set up very spaciously with wide and long views and where the second nine are surrounded with prestine nature. Really worth to play.

Juliette Falls

The golf course of Julliete Falls is located in Dunnellon at about 50 minutes from Inverness. Drive the US 41 (N Florida Avenue) to Hernando and proceed to Dunnellon. After Dunnellon turn right on to the US 40 and turn right after about 14 miles on to the golf course. This is pretty big sized golf course meandering through the forest with many big bunkers.

World Woods

The golf courses of World Woods are located at about a 50 minute drive from Inverness in Brooksville. World Woods has two 18 holes courses namely “Pine Barrens” and “Rolling Oaks”. As the name suggests these courses are surrounded by dense forest and hitting the ball straight is demanded. Both courses are quite hilly while Pine Barrens is the most difficult of the two. These courses are in the top 100 of America and the greenfee of $ 40 – $ 60 is supprisingly low. Highly recommended.

Southern Hills

The golf course of Southern hills is located at about a 50 minute drive from Inverness in Brooksville. This is a private course and can only be played with the Executive Golfcard. A truly magnificent course which is now and then visited by the LPGA and home of the PGA golf school. This course belongs to the top 10 of America and the greenfee of $ 40 – $ 80 is supprisingly low. A must.
